What is a milling machine for?

Milling machine is a kind of widely used machine tool, milling machine can process plane (horizontal plane, vertical plane), groove (keyway, T groove, dovetail groove, etc.), tooth parts (gear, spline shaft, sprocket), spiral surface (thread, spiral groove) and various surfaces. In addition, it can also be used for machining and cutting off the surface and inner hole of the rotary body. When the milling machine is working, the workpiece is installed on the working table or the first accessories, the milling cutter rotation is the main movement, supplemented by the feed movement of the table or the milling head, the workpiece can obtain the required machining surface. Because it is multi – edge discontinuous cutting, so the productivity of milling machine is higher. Simply put, a milling machine is a machine tool for milling, drilling and boring workpiece.

Development history:

Milling machine is the first horizontal milling machine created by American E. Whitney in 1818. In order to mill the spiral groove of twist bit, American J.R. Brown created the first universal milling machine in 1862, which was the prototype of the milling machine for lifting table. Around 1884, gantry milling machines appeared. In the 1920s, semi-automatic milling machines appeared, and the table could complete the automatic conversion of “feed – fast” or “fast – feed” with a stopper.

After 1950, milling machine in the control system development very fast, the application of digital control greatly improved the degree of automation of milling machine. Especially after 70′s, the microprocessor’s digital control system and automatic tool change system have been applied in milling machine, enlarged the milling machine’s processing range, improved the processing accuracy and efficiency.

With the continuous intensification of mechanization process, NC programming began to be widely used in machine tool operations, greatly released the labor force. CNC programming milling machine will gradually replace manual operation. It’s going to be more demanding on employees, and of course it’s going to be more efficient.
